A Walk Through History
Kyoto was Japan’s capital from 794 to 1868, and its history is alive in every temple, shrine, and street. We have already visited the famous Kinkaku-ji Temple, the Golden Pavilion, and were impressed by the peace that filled its gardens. Each place seemed to tell a story, and walking through historic neighborhoods like Gion felt like stepping back in time. Here, we even saw the famous geishas gracefully walking the streets, adding a special and authentic touch to our experience.
Culture & Traditions
Kyoto’s culture is deeply connected to Zen Buddhism, tea ceremonies, and traditional arts. We were fortunate to take part in a tea ceremony, where every movement had meaning. We haven’t seen the Gion Matsuri yet, but it’s famous for its colorful parades and traditional music. Kyoto is one of the few places where the tradition of geishas is still alive. Seeing a geisha or maiko (apprentice) in Gion was like witnessing a living art. The way Kyoto honors its traditions truly inspired us.
Food Scene: Where to Eat
Kyoto’s cuisine surprised us with its variety and elegance. We’ve already tasted many new flavors, yet there’s still so much more to discover.
- Nishiki Market: Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen,” this market is filled with fresh sashimi, yuba (tofu skin), and matcha sweets. We could spend hours here exploring every stall.
- Gion District for Kaiseki: Kaiseki is a multi-course dining experience, a Kyoto specialty. We have gone to a kaiseki restaurant in Gion, and each dish felt like a work of art. It was a culinary experience we’ll never forget.
- Pontocho Alley for Izakayas: This narrow street by the river is full of izakayas (Japanese pubs). We’ve enjoyed yakitori and tempura here, surrounded by the warm glow of lanterns.
- Ramen on the Go: Kyoto ramen has a rich, dark broth that’s absolutely delicious. We’ve already found a ramen spot near Kyoto Station that we love.

Kyoto has countless incredible sites, and every visit reveals something new.
- Fushimi Inari Shrine: Known for its thousands of red torii gates, this shrine is iconic. We have walked through the gates and felt a deep peace in the atmosphere.
- Arashiyama Bamboo Grove: Walking through this bamboo forest felt like entering another world. The tall bamboo surrounded us, and we continued to nearby Tenryu-ji Temple and its beautiful gardens.
- Kiyomizu-dera Temple: This temple offers breathtaking views over Kyoto. We went in the evening when it was illuminated, making the experience magical.
- Philosopher’s Path: This canal-side path is famous for cherry blossoms in spring. We have already walked down it, and the scenery was so beautiful it left us speechless.
- Kimono Rental and Cultural Experiences: We rented kimonos and spent the day exploring the city in traditional attire, feeling like part of Japanese culture. There are also places where you can try being a samurai or geisha for a day, adding depth to your visit and allowing you to experience Japan in an authentic way.
Directions to Get Around
Kyoto is easy to explore by foot, bus, or train. From Kyoto Station, we took the JR Sagano Line to reach Arashiyama’s bamboo grove. To get to Fushimi Inari Shrine, we used the Keihan Main Line. Walking is a great option, especially for exploring temples and markets in the city center.
Final Thoughts
Kyoto has left us with unforgettable memories. Every temple, garden, and meal was a new adventure. It’s a place filled with history, beauty, and a unique atmosphere that invites us to return. We can’t wait to come back and keep exploring.
